The Chordates are animals that are from the phylum Chordata. The phylum Chordata has three subphyla, which are Tunicata, Cephalochordata, and the Craniata. The common attributes of the Chordata include having a notochord, a hollow dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, an endostyle, and a post-anal tail. The phylum Hemichordata has been presented as a fourth chordate subphylum, but is considered a separate phylum.
Chordata have an inner skeleton with a backbone. They generally have four appendages that are legs, arms, wings or fins.
